This isn’t about guns. It’s about the minds of people who have guns. And those who purchase guns for their troubled children. What are they thinking???
Nearly every shooter in a school shooting has had a history of mental illness. Is taking prescribed drugs or is just getting off those drugs and going through withdrawal. Because they are children, yes, children killing children, on drugs, we have to look at the drugs and the history of the relationship of drugs that supposedly treat mental illness.
And the responsibility of a Food and Drug Administration that, while admitting they know that only about 10%, maybe, of people who have side effects from these drugs actually report them, they continue to approve drugs that are tested by the companies that manufacture them and make their fat living from these drugs. And they even approve of them for children.
The book “Prozac Nation” by Elizabeth Wurtzel describes the history of the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
The diagnosis and treatment of mental illness go hand in hand, historically. Diagnosing a mental illness depended upon which drug worked. In adults. Because we didn’t and still don’t understand enough about how the brain works, it has been and still is a guessing game.
So how do these drugs get tested for safety? What are you looking for, if you don’t know how the brain really works because the only people being studied are not “normal” and are adults? And how can you tell if it’s safe to give a drug to children when we don’t know enough about the adult brain, and therefore know even less about the difference between child, teen, and adult brains?
The answer isn’t pretty. You foist the drug upon a population and maybe watch to learn when something goes wrong. And something going wrong, as reported above, only gets reported about 10% of the time. And when a child on these drugs shoots a whole population of children ages 5-10, it may or may not be blamed on the drugs they are or have been taking, but most certainly will be blamed on lack of gun legislation. And even on non-enforcement of existing laws. Which hides the truth and diverts our attention to an object without a brain… a gun. An inanimate object.
If any of the shootings were associated with the drugs the shooters were taking, it was kept out of the public eye because they are children.
The FDA used to test drugs in it’s own labs, for 10-15 and even 20 years before allowing a drug to be sold on the market. That is no longer the case. The FDA and pharmaceutical companies are responsible for all these lives taken before their time. How unspeakably wrong. A class action suit should be made, but would do nothing but force an investigation.
How do you make the FDA and pharmaceutical companies do the job they are supposed to do? Well, fining them is nothing to them. Congress is not going to do it. Congress has its own pockets to fill.
But there is a way. The National Rifle Association, an organization with unlimited passion and seemingly unlimited money, is actually being threatened by these shootings because we as an uninformed public blame guns. It’s so easy to place blame without doing our homework. Not everyone has an analytical mind. We miss that part of education in this country.
But if the NRA wants to defend itself, it could, with a little prodding, be encouraged to go after the FDA and pharmaceutical companies who are manufacturing this threat. Because at this point too many people are angry. And, will become even angrier as time goes on, and more kids kill kids because they are continuing to be prescribed drugs instead of some loving upbringing.
Parents need to be taught. It used to be that doctors would be friendly enough to intervene with some advice, but it also used to be that we had smaller towns, and doctors were our neighbors. We respected them differently then.
Parents need to be taught what to watch for when their child must take a drug, but they also must be taught that the drugs that are advertised and pushed like a drug pusher pushing drugs… remember that?.... that those drugs are not a substitute for spending quality time with your kids. You have kids, you are responsible for them and their minds. The TV and all the gadgets that go with it are not substitutes for interaction with your kids. And if your kid has real problems, not those of inconvenience, but real problems that need real medication, you don’t buy your kid a gun with the hope that it will please them and make them social.
It would help if drugs were not advertised to the public. People read the ads, self diagnose, go to the doctor and demand a prescription, even though they don’t need the drug. Liquor and cigarettes have been banned from TV ads and pharmaceuticals should be added to the list. They should also be banned from magazine ads. It would cut down on some of the cost of Health Care in this country. Shoving pills is not doctoring. But when people demand pills, it encourages all the wrong practices. And it plays right into the pockets of the pharmaceutical giants.
It’s time to wake up and make some changes, and make some demands to those who can make things right. Stop trying to get government to do it all. Or even any of it. Instead, pit one organization against another. It might work, in this case.
